| MalerKotla - My State by Waqar Khan | ||
| Allah-o-akbar My father's family migrated from Malerkotla in East Punjab to Pakistan in 1948. My fore fathers lived there since 1442 AD. The history goes like this that Hazrat Sadruddin moved from Afghanistan to a place near present Malerkotla. One day, in 1450 Bahlol Khan Lodhi, the governor of Lahore and Sirhind, was passing by and decided to spend a night there. He got impressed by the piety and personality of Hazrat Sadruddin and promised that if he becomes the King of Delhi he would give her daughter's hand in marriage to Hazrat Sadruddin. He took over the reins of Delhi Sultanate in 1451, and became the first Afghan ruler of Delhi. He fulfilled his promise. He gave 56 villages to her daughter as a wedding gift. Hazrat Sadruddin laid a stone of a new city called Maler. His family flourished and ruled Malerkotla state since then. There were more than 500 Sherwani families in Malerkotla at the time of partition. Allah-o-akbar | ||
| History of MalerKotla | ||
| Allah-o-akbar Malerkotla, a Muslim pathan state, is most respected house in Punjab. Maler Kotla state was founded in 1600. It is a historic fact that during the 1947 riots when the whole of Punjab was in flames it was the State of Malerkotla which did not witness a single incident of violence. It was in island of peace. When the younger Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and the last Sikh Guru, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sarhind, Wazir Khan, his close relative Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla who was present in the court, lodged vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it is against the glorious tenets of Quran and Islam. Wazir Khan acquiesced and the Sahibzadas were tortured and bricked alive. At this the noble Nawab of Malerkotla walked out of the court in protest. Guru Gobind Singh on learning this kind and humanitarian approach profusely thanked the Nawab of Malerkotla and blessed him with his Hukamnama, Kirpan etc. In recognition of this act, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition.
To facilitate the oriental scholars, Punjabi University, Patiala, decided to establish an Institute of higher learning in this
field in the 'Urdu Town of Punjab' i.e. Malerkotla named after one of the founders of Malerkotla Estate, Nawab
Sher Mohammad Khan.
The NAWAB SHER MOHD. KHAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES IN URDU , PERSIAN AND ARABIC provides the facilities of
higher research in the area of Urdu/Persian Languages and Literature up to the level of Ph.D. Besides regular classes are being run for M.A.
(Persian) and Certificate Courses (Urdu, Persian and Arabic). | ||

| Excerpt from Sir Stanly Reed's book The British India founded | ||
| Allah-o-akbar 1948 statistics: Area: 165 square miles Population: 85,000 Revenue: 14 Lakhs The Malerkotla state consists of a level sandy plain unbroken by a hill or stream, bounded by the Ludhiana district on the north, by the Patiala territory on the east and south, and by the Ludhiana district, Patiala and Nabha states territories on the west. The nawabs of Malerkotla are of "Kurd" descent who came originally from the province of "Sherwan" and settled in the town of Sherwan north of the Persia and after settling for a time in Afghanistan near Ghazni came to India and settled at maler, the old capital of state in 1442. Originally they held positions of trust under the Lodhi and the Moghal emperors. As the Moghal Empire began to sink into decay, they gradually became independent. Although the Sherwani clan is famed as Pathan, it in reality is Sayyid in its origin, for its ancestral progenitor was Sayyid Husain Ghauri (RA.) who migrated from Ghaur during the reign of Khalifa Abdul Malik Bin Marwaan (d. 65 Aft) and settled in the region neighboring `Koohe Sulaimaan'. Sayyid Husain Ghauri (R.A.) settled among the Pathans and married the daughter of Batan Bin Qais Abdur Rashid. She bore him two sons, Lodhi and Sherwani. The descendents of Sherwani became known as Sherwaani. The state entered into political relations with the British government in 1909. At that time the ruler was Lt.Col his highness Nawab Sir Ahmad Ali Khan Bahadur k.c.s.i. k.c.i.e. who was born in 1881 and succeeded in 1908 and died on 16 Oct 1947 during the disturbances. When whole of the east Punjab was suffering from disturbances but the Malerkotla was in peace. India has no example of peace like Malerkotla State. The chief products of the state are cotton, sugar, poppy aniseed, mustard, garlic, onion and all sorts of grains. The state maintains sappers, infantry, cavalry and artillery. | ||

| Nawab of Malerkotla's protocol status | ||
| Allah-o-akbar In Mughal times, Court rank was based on the military commands held by individuals. This would change from time to time as they were promoted, demoted, executed or expired. The system was fluid and arbitrary, no defined order of precedence prevailing. British rule united India into one political unit for the first time in history. Communications internal communications expanded, international contacts grew, and interaction between the rulers, as well as, between the rulers and the central government increased enormously. The need for a universal order of precedence became necessary, so a system based on gun salutes gradually came into vogue. The more important rulers received salutes ranging from 21 guns, for the largest territorial rulers, to 3 guns for some minor sheikhs on the Arabian coast. H.H. the Nawab of Maler Kotla was given hereditary salutes of 11-guns (13-guns local). Allah-o-akbar Allah-o-akbar |
